  1. What are you doing to that beautiful tree??

  2. despiert

Gorgeous tree in the corner of what I’m imagining is a lovely garden.

  3. hugelkult

Expose the root flare (google that). And stop mulching with rocks. And dont fucking touch that root

  4. despiert

Does that tree have more than one cultivar actively growing branches? It looks like there might be at least two leaf types (green and purplish)

Kill it now? No. Harm it / potentially kill it long term Maybe, probably

  6. YankeeDog2525

Likely not. But why take the chance. Roots are cool.

The tree is nowhere near the root. Are you referring to a tree not pictured?

I doubt it will kill it. Is that mold on the leaves? If it is and it spreads might be worse than cutting a root.

Nah Japanese maples are unbelievably hardy when it comes to root pruning / transplanting. It’s just the tops that are delicate.

Source : I used to work in a tree nursery that specializes in Japanese maples. I hand dug and burlapped many hundreds of them. Even ones with a 15 foot spread.

Hardiest tree in the nursery next to gold mops

A tree has multiple roots. Removing one of them doesn’t kill the tree.

I don’t think that root belongs to the maple

why is there a black tarp over the soil?

  13. Traditional-Top-4538

Any other trees around? That dosnt look like it belongs to that maple

Just a note, be careful raising the soil level over the roots. They need oxygen to survive. Also rocks compact the soil, retain heat, and are a pain to weed. I’d recommend mulch, or a planting of pachysandra terminalis Japanese spurge underneath. If you like annuals, a solid mass of impatients would work. Both would keep the soil cool and help retain moisture.
