SOUTH BEND, IN (WSBT) — Unity Gardens rolled up its sleeves at Clay International Academy, planting a free-to-pick orchard.
Students got their hands dirty, helped plant a variety of fruit trees and learned about gardening along the way.
The effort went beyond the classroom, as the orchard also benefits the community.
“I love doing orchards for a number of reasons. First is the fresh food. A lot of parts of South Bend are food desert. It’s hard to get fresh food,” said Katie Lane Director of Operations at Unity Gardens. “All Americans could eat more fruits and vegetables and it’s great to have that be easily accessible to people.”
Once the trees begin to bear fruit, the public will be able to pick it fresh and take it home.
