I have been trying to cross Kosmicheskaia Feya (Kosmi for short) with other varieties for going on 4 months now with no success. The problem lies in Kosmi's reproductive parts- they're all globby & fused (see image 3 where the pollen is just casually growing in a petal, vs image 4 with my very regular Hunter's Dew Drops). They ARE present, and I am seeing some signs that the ovaries are possibly developing seeds on Kosmi, but nothing like my other crosses. When I cut open a pollen sack from Kosmi, there is next to no pollen in it, so I'm unable to fertilize my other plants. I keep trying, I cut open the sack and just stick the stigma of the other directly into the sack to scrape whatever meager amounts I can get…I've tried collecting pollen sacks from blooms that are fresh, to a few days, a couple weeks, a month, and even when they start to fade at 6 weeks. No change in pollen production.
Image 2 shows pollen sacks from Kosmi on the left, & on the right are Hunter's Dew Drops & Hunter's Andromeda, the ones I've been trying to cross with Kosmi.
My other AVs produce pollen like it's no one's business. All I have to do is prick their pollen sack with a needle and there's plumes of pollen going everywhere. When I cross any other AVs, I see signs that it's taken within just a few days, the fertilized ovaries start swelling. I tried crossing my two Hunter's varieties with others just to be sure their pollen was viable, and it is. I've already got seeds from them.
My goal is just to create my dream violet. The starry puff fantasy from Hunter's Andromeda, the beautiful cosmic variegation from Kosmicheskaia Feya, & the cosmic-like variegation on the underside of Hunter's Dew Drops leaves, with dark leaves to contrast nicely. All in a semi-mini package which is my preferred size. I have a good understanding of the genetics involved, I know how many generations it should take. I even know how to prevent this problem for future generations: of the hundreds of plants I grow from each cross, only breed the plants with normal reproductive growth. If I could just get past this first step I could have my dream violet in just 6 or so years if I'm lucky.
So that leads me here. Does anyone have any advice for promoting pollen production in African violets? Like some kind of supplement or fertilizer that contributes to pollen? Is there a way I can encourage Kosmi to have more regular reproductive parts that aren't melting into its petals? Should I try locking a bee in a jaw with Andromeda & Kosmi to see if the bee knows something I don't about coaxing pollen out??
