Gardeners are being encouraged to get these three plants into the ground without delay. With May just around the corner, most enthusiastic gardeners will have already packed their flowerbeds and containers with blooms that have added vibrancy and visual interest to their outdoor spaces throughout spring.
However, if you’ve still got some empty spots to fill, or you’re preparing to replace your spring flowers with varieties that will flourish during the summer months, one gardening expert has revealed three plants worth considering this weekend.
Adam Kirtland, a gardener who frequently posts advice and recommendations on social media, explained that these three plants are certain to provide your garden with colour throughout the entire summer, and they’re all available from garden centres as mature plants, meaning you won’t need to invest time nurturing them from tiny seeds.
He said: “Right now is the perfect time to fill your garden with plants, and a trip to the garden centre is exactly what you need. I’ve got three must-have plants for under £5, £10, and £20.”

For his budget-friendly option under £5, Adam suggested gardeners should look at chrysanthemums. Costs will differ depending on which garden centre you shop at, your location, and the size of the plant you’re after, but many established chrysanthemums are available for approximately £4.99 – making them a reasonably affordable choice for your garden.
The plant is available in numerous colours, and according to Adam, it will bloom “right through tothe very first frost” – meaning your garden will be bursting with colour throughout summer and autumn if you get them in the ground now.
He said: “This is a really simple plant to help you make a showstopping display. In fact, people were buying them even when I was filming.”
2. Senetti
For those able to spend £10 on a plant, Adam recommends the senetti. He advised placing it in a container rather than planting it straight into a bed, but noted you can enjoy “months of blooms” with this approach.

With many of us looking to begin sprucing up our outdoor space for spring, now is a good time to look at planting bulbs to lay the groundwork for a splash of colour early in the year. Thompson and Morgan has plenty of options live already while Gardening Express has unveiled their pick and mix flower bulb offer, with 10 packs of bulbs for £25
What’s more, senetti actually “thrive under neglect”. Adam described the plants as “great for a lazy gardener”, as they require minimal maintenance to keep flourishing. According to the RHS, they do need deadheading regularly to extend flowering, but this simply involves occasionally removing faded flower heads.
3. Geum
For those with a larger budget of £20 per plant, Adam said he “saved the best for last” and recommended gardeners purchase a Geum, a late spring flowering plant that looks similar to buttercups.
The gardening expert revealed that these plants possess a “very special trick” – as they can generate even more blooms if you prune them back and let them regrow.
He said: “If you cut them back, they’ll treat you with even more flowers later on. Once they finish flowering, cut them right back to the base, and they’ll flower again at the end of summer.”
Geums thrive in sunny positions with soil that retains moisture throughout summer, meaning you’ll need to water them regularly. That said, certain alpine varieties do prefer drier conditions, so always ensure you’re purchasing the correct type to suit your garden.
