My mother, 65, and I are lifelong gardeners — and these gifts are all we want for Mother’s Day
My mother is my best friend, and gardening is one of our favorite shared hobbies. Ever since I could walk, I would be out in the garden with her, growing vegetables, cutting flowers, and plucking weeds. She’s now 65, and I’m 33, but we still regularly garden together on the weekends!
Because Mother’s Day falls right at the beginning of gardening season (at least for us New Englanders), I frequently end up gifting my mom gardening supplies for the holiday. Over the years, I’ve given her gardening books, new ergonomic tools, and even live plants, and she’s always put them to good use. (I occasionally borrow them for my own garden, too!)
If you’re searching for a Mother’s Day gift for someone who loves to garden, my mom and I put our heads together and came up with this list of our tried-and-true essentials. There are options at every price point, so you’re sure to find something that will put a big smile on your mom’s face this year.

Conscious Step
Conscious Step socks are a great gift for the person who has everything — they’re wildly comfortable with too-cute patterns, and with each purchase, the brand donates money to charity. For instance, these bee-themed socks help support the nonprofit Pollinator Partnership, which helps to protect native pollinators.
Not a big gift-giving family? You can still show your mom that you’re thinking of her with this adorable gardening-themed card, which was designed by a talented artist. It reads “Mom, thank you for helping me grow,” and the interior is blank so you can write a message for your recipient.
I firmly believe that every gardener needs a pair of these overalls from Duluth Trading Co. I recently got my first pair, and they’re the ultimate accessory for working in the garden. They’re incredibly comfortable and flex when you bend over or squat down, and there are so many pockets where you can stash all your essentials, including your phone, sunglasses, pencils, and more. There’s even a slot where you can insert knee pads for added padding when working on the ground.
My mother gifted this book to me a few years ago, and I still come back to it every year! Floret Farm is one of the most iconic flower farms in the country, and this book is filled with all sorts of tips and inspiration for growing beautiful flowers at home.
Little garden accessories always make a great gift, and I’m smitten with these colorful ceramic watering cups. They’re just the right size to hold a bit of water for bees, butterflies, and other insects to drink, and there are dozens of colors and patterns to choose from. Plus, it always feels good to support a local artist!

DeWit
My mother and I both love Dewit gardening tools — yes, they’re a little pricey, but they’re infinitely better made than the generic ones you’ll get at big-box home improvement stores. These tools have forged steel blades and solid wood handles, and they come with a lifetime guarantee. This particular tool is amazing for weeding, but the brand also has trowels, cultivators, garden forks, and more.

LIGHOON
Sun printing — or cyanotype printing — is a super fun activity for all ages, and it’s always a hit for nature-lovers. All you do is lay a few flowers or leaves on top of the blue paper, then cover it with the included acrylic sheet and place it out in the sun. After just a few minutes, you’ll have a stunning one-of-a-kind negative print that makes for whimsical home decor.
I wear my Ponyflo baseball cap all summer long, whether I’m working in the garden or walking the dogs. The hat is lightweight and breathable, but the best part is its signature opening in the back, where I can thread my ponytail or bun. It lets me keep my hair up and off my neck in hot weather, while still providing protection from the sun.
My mother has rheumatoid arthritis, so bending over can be quite painful for her. For that reason, she almost always has this handy tool with her when she’s gardening. Grampa’s Weeder lets you quickly and easily yank out pesky weeds from a standing position, and it’s particularly effective for plants with tap roots, like dandelions.
This hose reel is hands-down one of the best purchases I ever made for my garden. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s worth every penny! It has a 100-foot hose that automatically retracts back into the housing with a simple pull, and it comes with quick-connect fittings that make it easy to switch out your nozzle as needed. I’ve owned it for three years now, and it still works perfectly.
Most gardeners could probably use a new pair of gardening clogs — I know mine have certainly seen better days! These popular shoes from Sloggers have a convenient slip-on design and come in several colors, and they’re even made right here in the USA.
Gardener’s Supply Company is a great place to shop for gardening gifts, and my mother and I both love these handy harvest baskets. They have a sturdy wooden frame that’s lined with a food-grade vinyl-covered mesh, and they’re perfect for harvesting produce from the garden — you can even rinse off your veggies right in the basket!
