Roughly 200sqm over grown garden. Cleared all the weed and cut grass/weeds. The ground was very hilly with the end being higher than the beginning. I hired a digger and levelled the hilly part and dug out a section near front of the garden to make extended patio area and continued path to make a gravel platform area in the middle where there is the most sun.
Costs:
Digger: £380
Type 1 and stone chippings cost (8bulk bags): £600
Sleepers: £260
Whacked plate rental: £70

I know I’m over budget but that’s what I expected tbh.

I want to seed the grass but there are lots of small stones and the soil is chalky – any advice on sorting this and the future of the garden is appreciated.

You’ve done a great job so far, impressive!
I guess new wood fencing is next?

My suggestion is to plant native plants instead of a lawn! You can plant groundcover nearest to the pathway for a couple of feet, then shrubs/native flowers a little further off the pathway, then a native flowering tree or two placed in your yard for shade. Idk where exactly you live so I can’t offer you specific plant advice, but that’ll be the lowest maintenance yard you could ask for in the long run

I’m dealing with something similar on a very tight budget with mostly secondhand manual tools. So far, the scuffle hoe and rake have been my best friends.

I could turn that into the sickest native garden.

I would plant all native plants and shrubs. If you plant lawn all you will be looking at from your gravel pad is the fence and neighbour’s yards.

Love it! Hope you enjoy the fruits of your graft (that’s what y’all call it I think?)

Looks like you have a lot of sun, let it help feed you! Depending on what grows well in your zone, maybe grab a few fruit trees, grape or kiwi vines, berries bushes, asparagus or strawberry crowns, artichokes… whatever perennials you enjoy eating. The earlier you plant them, the sooner they will give you food, and they are a lot less fuss than annuals.

I love the fire pit! That is my next project this summer, except I want a stone fire pit.

Native garden plus grow your own food in raised beds where possible. Lawns are detrimental to soil, nature, have high water use.

Lawn maintenance is expensive in time and money, just do native yard and it’ll look better and you won’t have to do anything

Looks great. Definitely a well deserved beverage after all that work.

I don’t get that point in putting the gravel path and seating area just to surround it with grass. It kind of loses the point of it being a feature. I think it would look absolutely incredible if you actually planted stuff around your seating area. Like shrubs and flowers all different heights to create some nice texture. It would be really nice to sit in the middle of it in the summer and would give your seating area some privacy.
