York County Penn State Master Gardeners celebrated Arbor Day by planting a historic pecan tree at the arboretum in John Rudy Park. The three-and-a-half-foot Jimmy Carter pecan tree was grown from a tree on the property of former President Jimmy Carter at his family home in Plains, Georgia. “This tree came from a parent tree at his home there. There’s a place called Heritage Trees, where we purchased the tree because they get permission to grow trees and sell them with historical significance, and this is the pecan tree right here,” said Dean Emig. The planting of this sapling marks the 23rd historical tree at the historic tree arboretum at the park.
