Hey guys! Last spring I had a monster hybrid squash-pumpkin thing grow out of this hole in my compost bin. Unfortunately it died shortly after my last post about it. However, that monster hybrid plant has sprung up again this year but within the inside of the compost bin rather than through this hole, and she’s really doing well!! (I am training her to grow vertically this time so that I can still have room to dump my food scraps in).
However, much to my surprise, I have a new buddy peering out of here alongside some grass. Plant identifying apps have said this is a sunflower, but I just don’t buy it. Granted, I don’t know much about sunflowers but I know that not a single one has touched the compost bin ever. I have no clue where a sunflower would’ve come from. If it is a sunflower that will be super cool! But I need help verifying that before I get too excited.
Also, any transport tips? Unlike my squash last year, this looks like the roots are actually pretty close to the hole and I might be able to just reach in there and try to take it out and put it in a better location. Or I might just let it thrive off of compost nutrients and hope it doesn’t die due to its weird placement. Since taking these photos I’ve picked out some of the random grass that also grew.
