I just picked up this verrucosum off Facebook and my plan was to put it on a moss pole but I'm wondering if I should chop the top and start the pole once it's propagated or if I should just attach it as is right away since it's pushing out a nice big new leaf.

Put it on a pole already. It will grow fast enough and eventually you will get rid of that part of the plant anyway when it outgrows the first segment of the pole.
