LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – As warmer weather arrives, many people may be reaching for their gardening tools.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, gardening offers benefits beyond the environment; it can improve overall health.
Dr. Deborah Benzil said gardening provides a full-body workout that can support bone health and may help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. It may also help keep the mind sharp and lower the risk of dementia.
Gardening can also increase sun exposure, helping the body produce vitamin D.
However, Benzil said beginners should take precautions.
“Remember it’s exercise. So prepare for it, don’t overdo it. And after you’ve done it, take a good stretch,” Benzil said. “Then look forward to the smell of the herbs, the taste of the vegetables, the beauty of the flowers.”
She added that anyone experiencing aches or pains while gardening should take a break and consult a doctor if symptoms persist.
