I live in an area where they sand the roads like crazy in the winter and it kills the lawn. Also, my lawn is full of weeds and I’m sick of trying to maintain it. For context, I live in the middle of Ontario, Canada, with a climate similar to Ottawa, On with a hardiness score of 4b. The winters get lots of snow and down to -40 Celsius, and summers are hot and muggy with highs of 40.

I’ve been doing a lot of research and think I want to try it myself. Looking for some input on my plan:

-Rent either a gas powered or manual sod cutter. I’m in good shape, and the area is small, so I’m thinking of trying a manual sod cutter. Is that crazy?

*V shaped 3-4 inch trench around the perimeter

*Layer of cardboard

*Potential compost layer (is this necessary?)

*Mulch layer

Looking for any recommendations. I’ve attached a photo of my existing lawn and an AI generated photo of my desired end goal
