I was cruising through the produce section of the grocery store over the weekend and got into a conversation with a guy who had only been in Wyoming for a couple of years and said he was having trouble getting anything to grow in his garden. You’re probably nodding in agreement, because if you have a garden, it likely took you a while to get it figured out.

If you’re struggling, like my new produce-aisle buddy, the City of Casper offers a little help for your garden. The annual Compost and Wood Chip Sale is happening now, and if you’re trying to improve the health of your soil in your garden or yard, this is one way to get ready for the growing season.
You have a little under two weeks to take advantage of this opportunity, and it’s easy to get the goods. You basically show up at the Casper Regional Solid Waste Facility between 8:30 and 3:30 pm, and staff will be there to answer any questions and get you all loaded up.
If you don’t have a compost pile at home and haven’t used a wood chipper to deal with a fallen tree, this seems like the easiest way to get the supply you need. Compost improves the biological, chemical, and structural health of soils. This further contributes to healthy plants and successful projects.
Compost is ideal for garden beds, lawns, and soil improvement. Woodchips are commonly used for moisture retention, weed control, and landscaping. When you combine the two, they can also help conserve water by improving soil moisture retention and reducing evaporation, making them especially beneficial in Wyoming’s dry climate.
