Warmer weather is here, marking the return of small creatures to our gardens. Many of us will be spending more time outdoors to embrace the sunny weather.

Barbeques and picnics are a great excuse to eat and entertain outdoors. Yet many gardens are also home to ants, bees and wasps.

They can become a bother if you want to relax in your garden, and they can even venture inside while all the doors and windows are open. Thankfully, there is a simple, natural hack you can use to keep ants and bees out of your space.

Social media home hack expert Molly Miller says you can stop ants and bees from being attracted to your patio spaces by sprinkling ground cinnamon.

She said: “Sprinkle a little ground cinnamon around your decking and patios to deter ants and bees. I even like to mix it with some water and spray down the areas where we spend the most time.”

Molly used a simple spray bottle to make her mixture and applied it to her outdoor chairs and cushions. Keeping cinnamon sprinkled by your door and windows will also help keep ants and bees from heading indoors.

Ground cinnamon is a cheap spice available at supermarkets. Sainsbury’s sells its own branded jar for 85p.

Bees dislike the smell of cinnamon, so it acts as a natural repellent. Meanwhile, cinnamon can disrupt ant scent trails, keeping them away from certain areas.

It is best to sprinkle the cinnamon on ant trails or where they are congregating.

If wasps are a problem in your garden and home, a plastic bag and some string can help deter them. Social media garden expert @gardening.with.ish said: “What we do is we take the plastic bag we fold it amongst itself in one corner and we get a nice point.”

By folding the bag down into itself, air gets trapped inside. Ish demonstrated how the bag becomes cone-like before taking the string and tying the bag shut.

He said: “What you are doing is creating a fake wasp nest because wasps are incredibly territorial, hence why they can feel a little bit aggressive when they are around you. They are defending their space.”

Ish explained that by hanging up the plastic bag that looks like a wasp nest, they will think there is another wasp nest nearby and move to a different place.

The expert added: “They won’t go near the space, in fact they will stay away.” Spring is an ideal time to do this, according to Ish, as you will see large wasps at this time of year seeking a new place to settle.

Place your fake wasp nest near sheds or trees, and the wasps will not settle in your garden.
