Moved into our home (New York city area) last year, and just this spring noticed this blackness on the base of this tree in our back yard (not sure if it’s new if if I just didn’t notice it last fall). It’s a really large tree that would pose a potential threat to our house and our neighbors if something were to happen…

A closeup of the black part of the base would be very helpful. Also, photos of all sides of the base would be useful. As far as the narrow fork in the 2nd picture, is there something to the right of the tree that can be damaged if that fails?
I think you need to have a Certified Arborist come out and examine the tree in person. There’s only so much we can tell from photos.
Definitely keep an eye on it and have an arborist take a look at it. Might be fine for a number of years or it could be a problem if it threatens your house
Looks like kretzschmaria deusta but hard you say without better photos. Either way, the tree needs to be removed ASAP if there are regularly occupied targets for it to hit. Chances are there is an extensive amount of you decay.
Im not sure if this is brittle cinder fungus but if it is, this tree needs to come down immediately.
