They said it was a deep pruning that was needed. My friend paid $250 to have the front yard done. I told him that this was bad. Should he request a refund?

What is it? Could be yew? It will grow back .. In like 10 years

What kind of bush? Some very well do bounce back

Sometimes has to be done to sheared plants, either that or remove completely. I’ve done harsher renovations than this on ilex, privet, and taxus. Don’t shear your plants guys(and gals)!

I looks like it was maybe growing over the sidewalk, so had to be brought way back, but its hard to tell. It does look quite jarring, but itll very likely recover and be manageable, though it may take 2 or so years.

You can do this to laurels and other shrubs, hopefully this is one of them.

It seems like the bush was likely overgrown. The options are to leave it overgrown, do what he did, or rip it out. He chose the middle path.

I mean, if this was a euphemism, that level of coverage is what you would expect. Any other situation and that’s a bit much.

Looks like what I just did to my box wood. They grow back nice.

It will fill back in.  Tell your friend to be patient and just give it some time.

I have the same bush on a similar curved area right infront of a porch wall but behind the sidewalk 😆 Yeah, you have to do this at a certain point. This bush doesnt have foliage very deep, as soon as you take an inch or two off it looks bare like this. Mine is back to normal this spring and I chopped it back this much end of last summer. Its looks extra rough cause it looks like it hasn’t fully bounced back from winter yet. If it was over the sidewalk its a tough spot.

No, they pulled a bandaid off for your friend. It was an aggressive prune but after it grows back in will actually be maintainable in the space it sits. It was likely under managed for a long time to the effect that the choices were likely this or rip them out and start over.

You guys should watch the Ask This Old House episode where Roger Cook does the exact same thing. The owner seems upset. But when it regrows it looks amazing.

    This is normal.

Looks like they did a proper job, good angle cuts on the lowers

  14. front_torch

They shouldn’t have allowed it to get that overgrown overtaking the sidewalk.

    Landscaper did what was necessary.

They did a good job atleast I don’t see any broken, frayed wood which would mean they used dull equipment and they cut everything at 45 degree angle. I wouldn’t worry about it give it 2 weeks to recover and then give it a deep watering with regular miracle gro fertilizer (high nitrogen)

Should have trimmed more of the inside branches to leaves have room to grow and get sunlight plus air cirulation. Once hedges get that large and probably maintained by powered hedge trimmers they need to be trimmed. The inside is sparse and ugly. Hand trimming with loppers and pruning shears gives beautiful hedges, but most people want to pay the slash & dash mowing landscapers

That’s going to be a very good looking bush in 4 months.

It will grow back in. He gave it a hard pruning which is really wacking the hell outta it but not damaging cuts but very precise cuts but he cut it back alot. It will take time but it will come back really a good looking bush . Nice and full. You can if it’s spring give it a liquid fertilizer every month and it will help bring it along well

  19. SloppyWithThePots

This was cut correctly. Probably overgrown and potentially cut at an angle downward. This will fill in

If it’s a holl’y it will be fine . They probably did it right especially if it hadn’t been touched in 10 years or so .

  21. clairec295

It will grow back and likely look better. Reading some of these comments, it’s amazing how many people are in a landscaping sub and don’t know what pruning looks like.
