We just finished this clear-grade horizontal cedar run. The street is pretty divided on it. The homeowner wanted a 'modern masterpiece,' but half the neighborhood thinks we should have stuck to traditional vertical pickets (like the existing fence visible on the right).

I think I would have tried laying all the boards out and match their patterns somewhat.

TBH, maybe this is unfair, but I have a somewhat negative perception of the horizontal fences because I see them on a bunch of low quality house flips and that association has kind of ruined them for me

Dont like it, doesnt fit, shoulda just matched your neighbor or the esthetic of the neighborhood atleast

How does cedar hold up against thousands of dog pisses?

Show us next year when it’s a buckle board fence…

Either way I would have matched the picket and not gone all the way out to the sidewalk like that. Make sure it’s within ordinance as well if it was permitted. But even so, I’d like the look more with the separation slightly further back like the picket is.

Just to tie it into its surroundings more, and ideally have space to plant in front of it.

And then yeah if you’re the builder – I would have tried to pattern match those boards a bit more. Or at least space them out differently.

Hopefully no taggers in that neighborhood.

That fencing doesn’t match the style of the home.

  9. I like your fence BUT I would rather see it in the backyard (and taller).

I much prefer the traditional picket fence, it’s more aesthetic than practical, whereas your fence IMO acts more as a practical fence.

    Backyard = practical
    Front yard= aesthetic

Idk what the neighborhood is complaining about, the next two houses have *no* fence and fuckin *chainlink.*

I know what ***I*** would be complaining about, which is that this is not remotely close to clear cedar, it’s #1 with some dips into #2

when I buy a house I’m hoping for a chain link fence because it means I’ll probably have to spend zero on repairs for the entire time I own the property.

IMO vertical almost always looks better, especially over time as everything settles, however horizontal is often cheaper because you can plan posts to concede with board length and have minimal drop. To each their own. If I’m buying a home I’m hoping for vertical.

    Ah, the ol’ Gentrifence.

They don’t age well at all. I’d prefer the picket fence if those were the only two choices. If the client was insistent on something more modern than the picket, I’d do a vertical board fence with alternating boards on each side. They look good on both sides and are strong fences that’ll last.

Looks like a wall, not a fence. Should have done pickets and matched the depth

yea, by going horizontal it makes the house appear shorter and the boxed fence makes the yard feel smaller

I don’t know why but honestly the horizontal fence feels cold and hostile.  Like a concrete wall.

Horizontal unmatched boards scream flipped to me (otherwise I’d like it). But I also hate white picket fences, and they scream either (old and wooden) that the house has had no updates in 30 years or (new and plastic) that the owners have only done cheap cosmetic fixes and no actual updates.

I also would have put the horizontal fence back a foot or so to leave room to plant ornamental grass, shrubs, or flowers. That would have helped hide the mismatched boards and prevented dogs from peeing all over the side and staining them.

how did OP just finish a fence that’s been like that since 2018?

  19. adognameddanzig

It’s a visually heavy fence and doesn’t “match” the style and scale of the house. It looks well made, though.

Hate it…hate it hate it. It is jarring with the cuts in it. Looks poorly done.

  21. Takes a short squatty ranch house and makes it look shorter and squattier. This only works imo with a modern, updated house with a large front yard.
