BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society will host “The History and Purpose of Victory Gardens,” presented by Emily Thabes at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Beltrami County History Center, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW.

The program will explore the multi-government campaigns of both World Wars that mobilized everyday Americans to grow their own food, and how that legacy lives on today, a release said.

“Victory gardens were a cornerstone of the wartime home front — grassroots, government-encouraged gardens planted in backyards, vacant lots and public parks to relieve pressure on the commercial food supply and sustain local rations,” a release said. “Thabes will trace the movement’s origins, its remarkable scale and what it can still teach us about community resilience and food security.”

The program will also feature representatives from the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners and One Vegetable, One Community, who will share hands-on expertise, seeds and information about upcoming gardening workshops in the area.

Attendees are encouraged to bring seeds of their own to swap with fellow gardeners.

Participants will also learn how to get involved with the historical society’s Community Victory Garden, located at the Nymore Community Garden plot.

“Whether ready to start a personal garden or looking to contribute to a shared plot, program staff will have resources available to help,” a release said.

As a special take-home gift, the historical society will have complimentary packets of sunflower seeds available while supplies last.

The program is free and open to the public.

Other times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
