Fire ants? Carpenter ants? Acrobat ants?
They started building a tiny mound by excavating the little strips where two sidewalk pavers join. Now they’ve built a huge mound in the mulch just to right of the original spot. I couldn’t get a close-up of them because they move too damn fast, but they’re quite small, and reddish-brown with black abdomens.

Fire ants are quite red so we can rule that out
Poke it with a stick. If they attack, fire ants.
Looks like ants. Stick your bare ass against it. If it tickles a little then it’s regular ants. If you want to die after then it was fire ants.
