Save yourself a small fortune on shop-bought tomatoes by growing your own with remarkable ease. It’s no secret that prices have skyrocketed in recent months, so anyone with a passion for gardening would do well to pay attention.

If you’re already growing tomatoes in your garden, there’s one simple trick that can significantly increase your crop. A content creator who regularly shares gardening tips with her 46,600 followers claims the simple practice requires you to take a cut from your existing plants and potting it in the soil.

Sally said in a TikTok video: “Did you know you could get a whole load of free tomato plants off the current one you’re growing?

“These side shoots, also known as suckers, grow in-between the main stream and branches of your tomato plants.

“And if you’re growing the varieties, it’s always best to remove these. However, you don’t need to discard them, you can just plant them in a pot of compost and they will then go onto form a whole new tomato plant.”

In the clip, she demonstrates precisely how to remove this sucker and replant it elsewhere to encourage further growth.

She explained: “Now I’ve pinched off quite a small one here but you’ll see on your plants there are some in different stages. The reason we move these branches is so the energy can be redirected into the fruit growing of the main stem.

“But each of these side shoots can grow into tomatoes themselves. As you can see here, this is one which is quite established. I will say removing them will support them as they grow.”

Sally suggests using a 9-10cm pot, filling it with some multi-purpose compost before placing the side shoot into the soil.

In time, roots will develop along the stem, giving you an additional tomato plant.

She concluded: “They do grow quite quickly.”

Prepare: Choose a ripe tomato and slice it into 1-2cm thick pieces.

Plant: The slices can be placed on top of potting compost in a tray or pot, then covered with a thin layer of soil.

Germinate: Maintain moist soil and position the pot in a warm, sunny location. Seedlings will appear within 1-2 weeks.

Transplant: When seedlings have developed at least two sets of leaves (approximately 10cm tall), move them into separate, larger pots.

Care: Finally, bury the stem when transplanting, as it will produce additional roots, making the plant stronger.
