JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Plant lovers look forward each year to find the perfect piece for their homes and yards at the Metro Master Gardeners’ Annual Plant Sale.
It’s not just an opportunity for bargains but a chance for the community to support educational programs and local projects centered around plants.
The day before the big fundraising sale, water trickles down leaves into containers that will be going to new homes. Metro Master Gardeners are preparing the various plants they’ve fussed over for months.
“I like to try to propagate roses,” said Pam Howorth.
The five year Metro Master Gardener’s specialty is roses.
The Hinds County retiree will be offering advice and information during the sale. A big question this year is what is a good tree to plant.
“We have vitex trees, which is a beautiful substitute for the crepe myrtle. Everybody has crepe myrtles then they’re starting to have disease problems,” said Howorth. “The vitex tree is kind of an alternative for that, and I have one that drops a lot of seeds. We do have a lot of little vitex trees.”
“We start in November bringing plants here,” said 16 year Metro Master Gardener Emily Dear.
The Mynelle Gardens greenhouse is where clippings and seeds are placed into soil, nurturing thousands of plants for the sale. The average prices range from $4 to $15, and more for larger plants.
Proceeds support educational demonstrations and upkeep at four area locations.
“We do give a scholarship to Mississippi State, $2,000, to encourage young people to go into gardening and farming and that area,” said Dear. “Greenwood Cemetery, we get together in February and everybody comes out and trims the roses back.”
Last year’s plant sale raised over $10,000.
The annual plant sale runs Saturday, April 25 from 8 a.m. until noon.
