Two nights ago we had a limb from our pine tree come off only onto the lawn… thankfully. It destroyed the holly tree that we had but that was all. We have three children that are three and under we are always in the yard so thankfully, it was raining that day because it could’ve been a different story.
Now my husband and I are concerned because the apartment on the property in which we stay at right now is under a pretty hefty overgrown tree… the apartment was originally a carriage house built about 1850.. I know getting rid of the tree completely might ruin the situation of the foundation for the apartment so I guess where I’m going with this is, what do we do? We plan on buying the property off of grandma to keep the house in the family but we don’t want to risk staying here and losing our family if a branch falls on us. We have renovations planned for the downstairs but I’m really worried about staying while we have this thing literally hanging over our heads. We also really don’t want to risk the tree destroying anyone else’s homes or lives. The branch starts at about the second story of our apartment I’m not really sure how many feet but well above 20…

Have a couple different certified arborists come give an assessment. Often estimates for work are free but an assessment may have small consultation fee. The more experienced eyes you have on it the better. From the photos it doesn’t look high risk to me. The holes in the trunk are from sap sucker wood pecker and they are minimally harmful.
Tree in question looks healthy from here this Spring. The pine could have been saved with a tree injection to mitigate that insect damage. The signs are always there if you know where to look. If removing that one limb would make you feel better, get at least 3 quotes. My guess no one is touching that without a crane. Factor that price into how much you’re actually worried
Probably just needs a good pruning, it looks healthy from the photos. I agree with the other arborist that you should have a few certified arborists come out and take a look at it. Remember some companies are shady and will try to convince you to remove it for the money. That’s why you should get a few different eyes on it so you can compare the different opinions. As always you should only have ISA Certified Arborists giving you their educated opinions on the matter. I’d do everything I could to keep that tree if I were you
Dont listen to anyone else’s advice unless it reads
: Get a certified TRAQ arborist out to perform an inspection.
That being said, here’s my advice: Get a certified arborist.
The pine tree failure? Thats scary, but the good news is – its no longer a risk! Also be prepared to not entirely agree with the arborist. Youre family is not *always* under the tree. In fact your family is probably *rarely* under the tree. 8 hours a day at work / school, 8 hours sleeping – that only leaves 33% of the day for you to be out there, and I doubt youre out there that entire time. All of this being said, YOU decide what risk you’re okay accepting. If the limb isnt something you’re comfortable with – remove it.
