Hello! New to gardening! I got this Dahlia tuber from Aldi’s I’m unsure of the exact kind. It’s multitude pinks on the front pic. Anyways it’s definitely sprouted! When should I plant it outside? I’m in upstate NY. We recently just had flurries of snow randomly. So I know it’s a bit too early, should I put it in a bigger pot? Do I use plant food? Any advice!

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:
When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!
*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).
If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.
If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

Professional horticulturalist (but amateur dahlia grower) here
1) be patient, last thing you want to do is get frost damage. Idk your exact zone but you wanna wait 2-3 more weeks at this point unless you’ve got the ability to protect it
2) pot size seems fine
3) I wouldn’t bother with fertilizer at this stage, but a low dose would be fine
I would wait, I’m in Northern CT and I am still waiting until mid May, I know upstate and you guys are always a bit colder than we are. I would make sure you careful rotate it towards the sun, it will reach towards it each day but if you turn the pot a little each day it should help it grow straight. I love starting mine in doors so when I plant them out I have a good solid start, your pot seems like a good size to start with, I think it will be great!
