Jack Stooks, former Senior Royal Gardener for King Charles has shared which garden jobs people should pay more attention to, especially with the rising temperatures ahead.

He has shared his gardening tips on when you should cut your grass according to the heat, and one common mistake people make during planting during the hot spring months.

For protecting your gardens in the warm weather, there will still be cold nights which is why there is still a decent amount of moisture in the ground, so mowing the lawn is typically normal but it helps to have your mower cleaned and sharpened.

Speaking to Smooth Spins Casino, the expert gardener says that the grass will grow and grow, which is why a weekly mowing routine is good practice to keep your lawn in good shape.

Weeds are starting to crop up for the season, which is best handled with hand weeding or hoeing if needed while keeping off pesticides. If hard rain occurs, the pesticides can wash off and cause problems to surrounding areas.

Jack insists on paying more attention to things you have in pots as they can dry out a lot quicker in the warmer weather. To help with the dryness, watering cans, hose pipes and other watering equipment are essential.

Tackling common mistakes, Jack says to keep your potted plants in the shade as it protects the roots.

He is insistent on preparing your plants for all sorts of weather as frost can pop up unexpectedly at any time which is what catches most gardeners out.

By taking your seedlings out of the glasshouse and planting them straight into the ground without hardening them off for example, a sudden frost can come in and damage them.

If you are worried about your garden ahead of your summer holiday, there is no doubt that your plants will need watering. Asking a friend or neighbour to come and water your plants at least once will solve that.

He says: “There’s always that sort of friendliness with gardening. People who garden do tend to have that sort of love for plants and for keeping things alive.”

By putting all your plants in the one shaded area with a hose nearby, this makes it much more convenient for the person coming to water your plants.

He adds: “Ideally you want to get somebody to water them in your cold frames and cause as little problems for someone else coming in as possible.”

Slugs and snails will be creeping out at this time of the year, which is why yeast drink traps are your go-to, especially for slugs.

Jack is not a fan of slug pellets as the birds who tend to eat slugs could fall ill, organic is the move according to the expert.

Aphids are also coming in which can also be dealt with using organic methods. Putting sachets around your glasshouses release tiny predators that eat the bugs that cause you issues.

During his time at Highgrove, he used a soap water type of spray which can be used on your roses, an organic mix that doesn’t kill off the bugs, bees and birds.

He adds: “You’re protecting the environment while enjoying your garden and having those pesticides done away with organically.”
