Yeah those look like river rocks to me, pretty classic choice for garden borders. They’re rounded and smooth which is typical for river rock, plus they give that clean separation between lawn and flower bed. I did similar thing in my backyard last year but went with slightly bigger stones – these smaller ones actually look better for this type of planting since they don’t compete with flowers

I have extensive rock borders like this.
Just be aware that the stones do sink over time. Every 2-3 years we have to go around stone by stone lifting them, re-leveling soil, and putting them back.
    It’s also hard to weedeat.

I just replaced a river rock border with a metal border. Gras and weeds growing thru the cracks was exhausting and I had to weed regularly. Also the edges were exhausting to mow/trim. It looked kinda nice tho (for like two weeks till I had to go thru it again). So without having a closed border (which probably requires mortar or concrete) I would advise against river rock as border.

I’m sure, as you do more research, you will find more accurate and realistic photos.

Just a word of advice, you may want to do metal edging, and put thick cardboard down under your river rocks to prevent weeds from growing. It is a constant task to weed between the rocks and keep the yard from creeping in.

I am ripping up my river rock this summer to do add proper edging to help keep the grass and weeds out. I did have cardboard under the rock, but it’s been 4 years, so it’s time to replace it.
