We bought a bunch of starts from Ace at their spring plant sale last month–a couple of watermelon that turned out to be NOT the personal mini kind, so I had to build them an anti-raccoon/squirrel pen), two cherry tomatoes, two regular tomatoes, two Bertha peppers, two serranos and two sweet peppers as well as some cilantro. So far, everything seems to be doing well! Except that one poor sweet pepper plant in the back. And the cilantro. Go figure. Can grow it in a cup of water on the windowsill by accident, but not in dirt.
This week, we also grabbed a couple of odd basil plants (cinnamon basil and a lemon or lime basil) and another set of onion starts (I left the previous bunch on the stove under a pot for a few days, but using the oven caused them to go mold). I put the two mints in the bed with the sweet pepper and ended up scattering the onion sets throughout in hopes they'll hope with the pests. And grabbed an already well established chili petin because I love those, and I'm a cheater. Haven't been able to find the perpetual spinach anywhere that another person kindly recommended, but still looking!
All spicy peppers get their own pots so I can make sure they get dehydrated DEFINITELY good amounts of water. Well, mostly their own pots. Some mushrooms decided to be roommates with one of the serrano peppers.
I was worried about overcrowding at first in the beds, but since each plant has their own personal water source (onions are four to a ball; the cilantro and tiny basil don't get one), they seem pretty happy.
