tldr: has anybody completely changed the substrate their plants are in, and how did you do it? any tips or resources to point me towards? sorry, i'm a yapper. what follows below is more context
after some root rot killed my only two AVs in soil, all of my large ish AV plants are in fluval stratum. it's these teeny little clay balls, meant to be aquarium substrate. but this stuff grows plants like nothing else!
i used it for other plants for a long time, and it turns out the person i bought my violets from does too! everything ive bought from her (except the two in soil that i murdered) is in stratum, because things do root and grow a bit faster in it.
i do really like it, there's a lot of advantages. things root really fast! especially plants that like it a little acidic.
but the stratum seems to compact and run out of nutrients faster than soil. plus, it's expensive, especially if i wanna use it for any larger plants.
i want to switch to using soil and perlite. i tried 50/50 but i think i'll try a 60/40 or 70/30 mixture, because my plants rotted last time i tried this.
they are wicked watered, which i would like to keep with because it's easy. right now i have several plants in 2" pots with stratum, that i want to switch to perlite & soil. i already have the soil, too!
i'm wondering how to transition my plants to soil and perlite, from fluval stratum. i've done it with other plants successfully but not AVs, and i want to know if anyone has tips.
has anybody completely changed the substrate their plants are in, and how did you do it? any tips or resources to point me towards?
