With spring now finally here in the UK, keen gardeners are busy tackling tasks to ensure spectacular displays of colour in their gardens.
Among the favourites is the cherished peace lily, which blooms beautifully from spring through to autumn, though it does require specific care to truly flourish.
Many plant lovers will be familiar with the frustration of having lush, green peace lilies adorning their windowsills, yet mysteriously failing to produce those coveted elegant white flowers.
So how can you encourage your treasured peace lilies to burst into bloom this spring? There’s a simple natural remedy that’s proven remarkably effective for coaxing flowers from reluctant plants.

The natural home remedy to make peace lilies bloom
Plenty of gardeners steer clear of aggressive chemicals when tending their houseplants, favouring instead gentle, natural methods that are kinder to both the plant and the planet, reports the Express.
One particularly popular natural solution that’s earned rave reviews for reviving non-flowering peace lilies is giving the plant a monthly watering with a cup of uncooked rice water.
Rice water has earned its reputation as an excellent organic fertiliser for peace lilies because it delivers modest amounts of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus – three vital nutrients that houseplants need to stimulate flowering, encourage leafy growth, and support healthy root systems.
Packed with zinc, iron, and sulphur, this natural solution delivers essential plant nutrients to the soil when applied in the right quantities.
It’s crucial to keep the raw rice water completely free from oil, salt, or any seasonings whatsoever, as these additions could hinder and damage your peace lily’s development.

There’s more to it. Rice water also provides trace amounts of minerals such as magnesium and B vitamins, which fuel the plant’s energy production, leading to more impressive and abundant blooms, particularly in peace lilies.
How to use rice water to encourage peace lily flowering
Simply pour cold tap water over a cup of rice and rinse it thoroughly (either with your hands or by stirring with a spoon). You’ll notice the water becoming cloudy straight away, and that’s when the beneficial properties are released.
After rinsing your rice, transfer the leftover liquid into a cup or container, and apply it to your peace lilies once monthly.
Should the mixture appear too concentrated, feel free to dilute it with additional fresh water. It’s important not to keep your raw rice water stored for extended periods.
Tishana, a gardening expert and founder of Coco and Seed, explains: “After you wash your rice, the water that is left back contains starches and minerals. The minerals contain trace macronutrients of NPK, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that help your plants grow.”
It appears peace lilies have quite the affinity for rice, as yet another rice-based trick has been found to make “so many flowers explode” on these low-maintenance houseplants.

On the widely-followed YouTube channel Plant Tips, a horticultural expert revealed how combining rice flour with water can produce spectacular blooms on peace lilies.
The specialist enthused: “Amazing result, grow peace lily with one cup of rice flour, so many flowers explode.”
To try this method, blend one cup of rice flour into water until you achieve a thin, runny consistency. This solution can then be used to wipe down the leaves of your peace lily, and any remaining mixture can be poured directly into the plant’s soil.
As with all natural remedies, it’s essential to limit this treatment to just once a month, as over-application could prove seriously harmful to your plant’s health and development.
The Plant Tips specialist was filmed watering their peace lily with the rice flour solution, even decanting it into a spray bottle to mist the plant’s surface.
After three months, the expert unveiled the remarkable results, with the peace lily bursting into bloom and appearing considerably healthier and more vigorous than in the earlier footage.
Whether using either of these rice-based methods, it’s vital to apply the natural fertiliser sparingly — no more than once monthly — and to continue feeding your cherished peace lily with ordinary tap water or rainwater in between treatments.
