Tour and talk with retiring Yoakley Head Gardener Paul Twyman
By Jenny Duff
Garden lovers in Thanet are invited to a special guided tour and talk at the award-winning Yoakley House gardens in Margate on Friday 8th May.
Head Gardener Paul Twyman, who has previously worked at RHS Garden Wisley and Hever Castle, will lead visitors through the gardens, sharing insights into the design, planning and planting, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at work that has helped the gardens earn their award-winning reputation.
The event marks one of the final opportunities to hear from Paul before his retirement, offering a rare chance to learn from his years of horticultural experience, making this a particularly special occasion for all keen gardeners.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to take part in a plant auction, with a selection of plants available to bid on, a perfect way to pick up something special for your own garden.
Tickets cost £8, including refreshments, with all proceeds going to the Yoakley League of Friends, supporting residents and the ongoing care of the gardens. Advance booking is required to reserve your place.
Michael Yoakley’s Charity was established in 1709, following the death of Michael Yoakley, a Quaker from Margate, who rose from ship’s boy to successful businessman. He never forgot his roots and showed great care for his mother, who had been widowed early in his life. He left his assets in his will to the ‘deserving poor’ older person in Margate.

The first almshouses were completed in 1710 and the charity has gone on to provide a total of 49 almshouses and bungalows. Yoakley House is a care home with 31 ground floor rooms, some of which are offered for respite care.
