I have 6 maples, ranging from 5-3 years old.

This year I might have lost 5 of them. Although they have buds to some extend, some of the buds are also already yellow.

Our spring this year has started very slow with currently still having some nights around 2-3 degree Celsius. But I’m worried as one has already very much open leaves since 3 weeks and usually their are open at around the same time.

They where all in a greenhouse when we had -10 Celsius and also had their pot covered for the cold.

Let’s hope for the best I guess.

I lost one of my two bald cypresses too. It probably dried out in winter 🙁

  2. Agree with the other comment. Drying out much more likely than the cold. Happened to me last year with a bunch of tridents. Had alot going on with other things in life and only watered a handful of times over winter. Lost a forest and a nice root over rock I had been working on for 7 years. I also lost a bunch of 1-3 year old starters. A few other tridents had significant die back. Some other species showed signs… less flowering than normal in spring, some slow starts in spring, etc. But the tridents were the only things that really died off. Same thing as your japanese maples… buds on many but then they either didnt open or were very weak. Most trees green on the inside when cutting them, but turned brown by summer.

Dont give up on them yet, I would wager atleast a few have some leaves open eventually, but maybe off the trunk down lower if the tops died.
