The photos aren't great, but one bunch had white petals with violet speckles throughout and the other was much more magenta than typical. Of course there were lots of the more common purples, pure whites and Confederates in the same area. Probably all Viola sororia?

Yes sororia. I have the speckled ones too!
I recently read about some violets being split off into *Viola communis* that look just like *Viola sororia* to me, although several botany websites assure me they are unmistakable and obviously distinct. The Confederate violet was identified as being *Viola communis var. priceana*, so it may have been booted from *Viola sororia*, or maybe *Viola sororia* also comes in white. We need a violet taxonomy enthusiast to speak to this.
These are seed strain cultivars of Viola sororia called ‘Freckles’ for the first one and ‘Rubra’ for the second one.
