Somehow, bank holidays are often paired with a yearning to head to the garden centre and revamp your outdoor space. Whether it’s the hope for warm weather or an extra day to play with, a long weekend is the calendar date for gardens.
But before you down tools to peruse potted perennials, there are some spring cleaning jobs that your outdoor space is desperate for you to complete ahead of the summer months.
Top of the TLC to-do list, says Chris Moorhouse, Category Director of DIY and gardens at Wickes, is clearing the gutters.
“Before thinking about anything else, it’s important to get gutters cleared, as winter can leave them blocked with leaves and debris,”
he says.
But why now?
“The Bank Holiday presents a perfect window of opportunity to tackle home maintenance jobs,” he says.
“An important time to clear gutters before the heavier rainfall – and with rain dominating the forecast so far this year, it’s more important than ever to maintain guttering so homes are prepared for the increase in this type of weather.”
Chris explains that blocked gutters can quickly overflow, allowing water to seep into roofs, walls and foundations – by clearing gutters you’ll ensure rainwater is diverted away from your property, “helping to protect against water damage and avoid expensive repairs later in the year”.
With that job out of the way, next comes the satisfying part: pressure-washing patios. It’s not just about watching your dirt magic away – it’s an essential job too, says Chris.
“Giving patios and pathways a thorough clean isn’t just about making them look good for guests,” he adds.
“It’s also a crucial safety step, removing the slippery moss and algae that builds up over winter. A good pressure wash can transform these surfaces quickly, making gardens inviting and ready for the first sunshine of the season.”
Your garden? Consider it spring-cleaned. Now for that trip to the garden centre!
