When is the right time to cut a grafted cactus to let them start growing on their own? Is there a certain size where it’s best to do it? Is there a best way to do it? I remember seeing someone putting like a plastic baggie full of soil around the bottom of the graft to start roots while grafted and it worked. Wondering if maybe that’s the move or if it’s just easier to cut it, callous, and then plant it.
And what about pups? What’s a good size to maybe graft them to some SP?

For the first pic, if you are in the northern hemisphere I would wait a few months. You see how it is ballooning out. If it keeps or sustains the same diameter it’ll be a better piece to propagate and then you end up with a little chunk to graft or log or whatever.
For the second I don’t know. I’ve dealt with stray pups where the stump dies and just let them scab and put them in a good soil mix and keep its mostly dry-ish and they tend to root. With all those pups I would seriously consider letting it do its thing and pump them up and harvest and propagate as late as possible.
I like to leave a few areoles at the base of the graft so it’ll push some more pups out.

Until it is about to fall off, is the general consensus when I ask this question.
