FALSE!! New growth does indeed grow more figs, HOWEVER,,, they are smaller and take a little longer to mature…. Old growth does indeed grow figs.. But, thy grow earlier and LARGER……Trust me bro.,, I alternate my TWO trees trimming. one grows early and one grows a bit later.
These vids hurt. We had an old fig tree on the property where we built our house. 2 years in we had an ice storm that broke the tree down to the ground. Killed it dead.
Mine did the same. It was cut down to a stump and it grew back within a few months and was covered in fruit. I’ve never seen a tree grow back like that since then. 🙂
So, this isn’t exactly true. Many figs produce TWO crops. A “breba” crop on old wood in Summer, and a main crop on new wood later. Idk what kind you’ve got here, but there are a TON of different species and varieties of them all.
I have a big 20yo fig tree in my backyard, never pruned it in my life, it gives fruit each year like crazy more than once on all branches. I make so much preserved figs I have to give most away to neighbors.
My mom had one, amazing plant, she got always lots of figs. But we had to remove it cause the roots went into the pipes of the bathroom and made a complete mess. It was a shame
For those watching, him saying figs ONLY produce on new growth is not the truth. They all do produce on new growth, but not all varieties produce on old growth. In otherwords, HIS variety only produces on new growth.
Fig trees are hardy as hell. I rooted out a massive one I had in my garden and a few months later…. Another one popped out out of a root I hadn't seen. It's like a dammed hydra.
No figs do not only grow on new branches. While the main and usually larger higher quality crop does form on the current seasons new growth many common fig varieties also produce a breba crop the earlier often larger fruits on the previous years wood one year old branches. Heavy winter pruning that removes this older wood eliminates the breba potential for that season but encourages vigorous new shoots for a stronger main crop later. In short figs fruit on both old and new wood depending on the crop cycle variety and pruning approach making the only new branches claim an oversimplification that ignores the breba bonus in suitable climates.
None of mine but the 2 chicago amd this old ass italian unknown my uncle brought home in the 50s have come back so far. Getting worried. We had a hard ass winter this year.

Figs. Fresh figs are so yummy
i have a fig infestation, keep cutting it down but it comes back. they're not the edible fig kind though.
how's your dragon fruits? make more videos about it!
This is kinda misinformation.
Figs CAN form on old wood, these are called Breba figs.
But nonetheless, they mainly form on new wood 😅

Thank you for the tips!

I absolutely love figs but thought i never prune them, even without pruning I got abundant harvest
So, even if removing 30 percent of those branches, are there any possibilities to increase fig production than average?
Like adding fertilizers, or something?
Man! We have a fig tree and waited like EIGHT YEARS for fruits and never knew this 😂
So glad you shared this
It’s nice to have a central trunk before doing this or you end up with a mess of a bush on the ground
I don’t know how many years we’ve had our fig tree… waiting… just waiting… ✂️ next year
Weird ….I don’t prune mine and I get figs still
I'm too carribean for this

Not true when the leaves fall off figs comes in its place. Have fig trees and know this as fact
Squirrels pruned my year old fig tree for me. It’s looking great. I also learned that fig leaves are edible.
I inherited a grape vine when we moved to a country home. Help!

Damn I wanna do this.

What about the breba crop? Grows on the growing tips of last year's wood. Gives you fruit twice each growing season.
Works with birds of paradise, you can cut them down like an enemy bloodline and they come back with a vengeance

Jokes on you! I'm in zone 6b-7a and our figs die back to the ground every year whether we like it or not! FIGS EVERY YEAR!
does this go for peaches as well? since those grow on new wood too
Do the roots and the plant that regrows in the spring benefit from leaving the wood from last year attached?
That's amazing you can do that and get free trees.

I love my fig tree…I’m wearing a leaf right now 😂
Ive learned so much from you. Thanks for the consistent information. Garden knowledge should be well known by all. Your appreciated.
Did the same to my aloe vera, roses, palm trees, and half of my lemon balms, they all exploded within weeks
Wish I knew this before I got new leaves

I just did mine… I needed this info thank you.😅
