Yup vinca is a pain. Try tilling it up and covering with black plastic or lots of cardboard to starve it of light.

    Good luck!

Poisoning your land because of a pretty purple flower 🙄

Man thinks they have dominion over nature…. Reality is the opposite. Learn to love it

Vinca vine. I would pull by hand (I’d recommend a nejiri gama hoe, which helps you slice under the roots more easily). It grows in my mom’s front yard but doesn’t like the sun.

Lol and here I am trying to get it to cover some of my landscaping more.

    It’s Vinca.

  6. Invasive Vinca minor. Well invasive in North America. Triclopyr or roundup but vines can have issues with absorption. Most has to do at leas some physical removal

It’s vinca minor, sometimes called periwinkle. I would recommend digging it up by hand. It’s quite easy to pull up with a trowel after it’s rained.

That being said, it’s also a nice ground cover and easy to contain if you stay on top of it. We bought a house where the previous owners had tons of garden beds professionally put in, and it’s been a nice filler for until we get a chance to decide what to do with certain areas.

I’ve had pretty good success with physical removal, literally just pulling it up. Then waiting to see where it tries to come up again and pulling. First year I pulled up huge mats of it. 2nd year a couple stragglers. 3rd year maybe one stubborn bastard hanging on.

I bought 40 of them as young plants today. I love them and have plenty of beds with them in my garden. But they’re not considered “invasive” in Germany, what seems to be the problem here. Shoutout to r/NoLawns.

  10. I love it. I’ll gladly come over and dig it up for my yard

    It’s a beautiful flower…

I planted 30 last spring. It’s excellent low maintenance group cover.

Why you hating on Vinca? It’s a great ground cover.

I love mine. The purple flowers are so pretty when they come. Nice, understated ground cover with some seasonal personality.

  15. Just pull it out by hand after a rainy day. It’s my favorite ground cover because, comparatively, it’s super easy to pull out when it escapes.

I use either a small spade or a smaller trowel to loosen the soil up around it then pull it out, roots and all. After one big session of that, you can remove incidental regrowth very quickly and very easily. And at least it’s not ugly.

Why? I use Vinca for ground cover around my lilac bushes in the corner of my back yard and it’s really lovely and easy to contain.

One of the previous owners of our house planted Periwinkle and must have forgotten about it. It completely took over the north side of the house and was choking out everything.

My wife and I went out and pulled up **three** 65 Gallon barrels full of it. We actually found two Azalea bushes, a Gardenia bush, and a small Japanese Maple underneath all of it.

We certainly are still not rid of it after 6 years, but as long as we constantly stay on top of it, we have managed to keep it under control. Thankfully, its pretty easy to pull out.

Vinca Minor, horribly invasive! Hand pulling is your best bet.

Love mine. You can use a trimmer to control it somewhat.

  21. showmenemelda

Someone in your neighborhood or gardening club might take it. Looks pretty.

Vinca is invasive in my area, it does fine as a ground cover if you mow around it and keep it trimmed up and contained but once it’s loose it’s a hassle.
The good news is once the digging out is done stray sprouts are easy to uproot. I have been pleasantly surprised by the natives that were laying dormant under the vinca I have removed.

It’s much less tenacious than blackberries or English ivy.

About a 2/10 on the ‘This vine is going to be trouble’ scale. You’re looking at a toddler and wondering if you have boxing gloves in the garage.

Vinca minor is a beautiful little ground cover. But easy to pull up
