Are the dead leaves only in the dead areas? Some fallen leaves can burn sensitive plants or even cause rot.
If it’s not that then yep they don’t like drying out or animal wee.

As others have said – dog pee is a possibility. But if it is not, maybe too wet or too hot? They like moisture but not heaps – have you had a not of rain? Alternatively, Have you had a lot of heat?
