I have a similar species. This is what I would do. I have too many trees, so I would lop at least in half to a branch now. Next season I’d hack to the bottom branch, just before bud break and go from there. Again I have a lot of trees, so I’d put in a even wider pot, plant over a slab under the soil. That said , it’s fun to have a tree in a bonsai pot, so enjoy as you see fit

  2. I refer to this shape as slingshot style – a straight trunk that splits into 2 branches of the same width like a Y. Generally this is not a preferred style, so you are going to have to do something.

The first step in designing a tree is deciding how large you want your finished bonsai to be. Because we are trying to make a miniature version of an old tree, to keep things in perspective, there is a general guideling that the height should be 6-10 times the width of the trunk at the base. It looks like your trunk is maybe 1.5 inches wide or so? That would give a height of 9-15 inches. Cutting this tree back to that size does not leave you much to work with – and you actually have to cut it back way further that that, because you have to leave room for the new canopy that you have to grow. But you could definitely do that, and in 5-10 years have a nice medium sized tree.

The other option is to take it out of the bonsai pot, get it into a larger grow pot, and let it grow un-pruned for a few years to thicken up the trunk. Then you can start building a larger sized bonsai tree.

I’d consider airlayering. That graft scar is pretty gnarly, but in a bad way. It’ll look better over time with growth, but I doubt it’ll ever look good.

But when to airlayer is another question. If this were given to me as it is now, I’d let it grow this year, then repot into a larger pond basket or just a larger pot and just let it grow for 2-3 years. Then I’d consider airlayering. I’d likely airlayer both trunks separately.
