New home owner. Do I have the right idea here? This is all a giant dirt patch, tree cover seems to prevent grass growing so I'm just going to mulch it. Is this a good edge? About 3-4" deep

Yes that’s the idea. Keep in mind that every other year you’ll want to re-edge it (if not more often, depends on how things go with grass/mulched area).

You may want to reseed the grass _before_ you put the mulch in whilst everything is still dirt-friendly. The order of operations is pretty flexible but worth considering for ease of finishing. From here I’d rake the area to be seeded, seed, straw, clean up, water, then mulch.

You can do a natural edge like you have there, but you’ll have lots of grass growing into the mulch soon. If you wanted to, and you’ve already done the hard work of cutting an edge, you could put in a physical barrier such as vinyl, aluminum, or stone edging. Something like bullet edgers are cheap and relatively foolproof for a homeowner to install.

The curve in the foreground looks just a bit wonky/kinked but it looks like you’ve done a good job otherwise. You’re definitely on the right track. Can you get it any deeper? In my book, 4″ is about the bare minimum I’m aiming for.

I’d put weed matting down to keep it nice.

i regret having a curve in my grass.. sprinklers will either water your mulch and waste water or miss your grass. if you’re hand watering then it’s fine
