I’ve got an insane amount of poison ivy in my yard. Any tips on how to get rid of all of this?

I love the goats idea! But otherwise, it’s ripping it out by the roots repeatedly, you’ll eventually get 99.99% but still will have stragglers pop up. There’s surely some big daddy roots or vines in there.

Agricultural vinegar; 30-45 percent; works great but keep spraying new shoots when they come up until the roots die off.

    #1 best option- goats.

#2 poison, then when it withers down to nothing, then you have to bag it, carefully, using proper gloves and wash the gloves. seal the bag and dispose.

You can buy these protective suits off Amazon to protect yourself. Then rip it up and bag it. If you use any type of veg kill the leaves and vines are still deadly. Never I mean never burn it. Good luck.

Dissolve 5 lbs of salt in boiling water then add vinegar and borax into a sprayer. Cut down to the soil then spray the area with the mixture

I used put on a tyvek suit and latex gloves .. eventually I just put on latex gloves and gently pull on the vines until the roots pull out.. and when I’m done I scrub my arms with Blue Dawn and wet paper towels.. if you wash within an hour you can get the oils off ..

I pulled most of mine by hand and i’m extremely allergic to it. I got a literal hazmat suit and only wore underwear under it and threw them away. I put on a pair of vinyl gloves, then taped the gloves with duct tape to my hazmat suit sleeves. then put another pair of gloves and taped that too. I put on socks I didn’t care about and taped them to the pant legs. I put all the poison ivy into a trash bag. the hardest part was sweating my ass off in the hazmat suit and not being able to wipe my face.

  8. Goat rental service… it’s a real thing! They will bring a group of goats for the day, fence them in your yard and they will eat anything in reach to the ground. After they are done just go in with weed killer.

Glypohsate, 24-D combo can. Only way to kill the rhizome

In my case, long sleeves, coveralls, rubber gloves + garden gloves, hat, and tecnu. Pull those fuckers out by the roots. Don’t touch your face while working, and wash any tools you use after with dawn (or tecnu)

Lots of experts in here. What size yard are we talking about here? Where is the source of the poison ivy? What do you use your backyard for?

You’re going to have to manually remove the source, mother, the largest vine, whatever it may be. Then spot treat smaller areas whether that be manually or chemically. After that I suggest using pelletized lime on the soil. The lime changes the PH of the soil and will prevent poison ivy seeds already in your soil from germinating.

Currently suffering from it after pulling it out

Pro tip here. You have some time after exposure to clean off the oil. It takes like 2 hours to absorb into skin. Wash thoroughly with soap and water, and extra wipe dry.

Salt the earth. Nothing will grow here for 2000 years

Yall do realize goats don’t eat the roots right? It’ll just come right back.

Bunny suit, rubber gauntlets , face mask, eye protection, rubber boots. Pull out as much as you can and put it into large heavy plastic bags. Follow up with spraying the whole area with ground clear. I think they even make one specifically for poison ivy.

ETA: as many other people have said, do not burn it.

Trichlopyr is a much more effective weed killer against poison ivy than glyphosate.

I’m having trouble getting a good look at what the poison ivy is growing among. Almost looks like privet. If it is privet, hire someone to come in with heavy equipment and scrape all that shit out. That would help you get a handle on the poison ivy.

  19. MotorQuantity229

A razor blade, glyphosate, and a paint brush.

  20. BasilRevolutionary38

Triclopyr would be better than glyphosate

We’ve always used brush b gone. It’s not the best for other things, but it’ll kill that crap. Then once dead, use a hoe to remove. Use disposable gloves to put into the trash. Wear a long sleeve shirt, with the sleeves tucked into the gloves. Remove said gloves and then wash shirt immediately.

I know it’s hard to handle. Be careful. I have undeveloped property bordering on our own, so unfortunately I have to process yearly.

Put on a tyvek suit and gloves and rip it all out, roots and all. Bag it up and put it in the garbage can. It may take a couple years of doing this 1-2 yearly, but you’ll make a dent pretty quickly and you *can* get this taken care of.

  23. rwally2018

There is also a specific poison for ivy. It works great

  24. Illustrious-Rub-3100

You can rent goats but if you can’t I always used 30% vinegar dead in a few days and won’t be back

  25. WildTurkeyTrot

Ortho poison ivy killer worked well for me.

  26. BigEyedOwls

I spray ours with a solution of: 4 cups of Industrial vinegar (at least 45%), 1/4 cup table salt, and 1.5 teaspoons of Dawn dish soap. Mix vinegar and salt- heat until the salt dissolves then cool and add the dish detergent. Spray the poison ivy until it’s dripping. Wait 2-3 weeks and spray again if needed.

  27. Mammoth_Possibility2

i have the solution, only thing that I have been able to dream up that actually worked. I have a 1 gallon pump sprayer in which i dissolve as much rock salt as that gallon of water will take. then just soak the ivy. it might take a few applications but it will work, and you arent spreading noxious poison all over your yard. it wont harm the insects or the animals that prey on them. you are welcome.

I use Round Up. I try to use it sparingly these days but it works on poison ivy. Use a concentrated dose every two days during a dry week. This worked for mine 2 years ago when I found a new cluster of vines in my brush.

I had a bunch in my flower beds in the house I bought last year. I sprayed brush killer for a few days on them and it all withered away I then used a hand tiller to rip up roots and carefully pulled up the dead Ivy and roots wearing gloves, and long sleeves and pants and then mulched the beds and haven’t seen any since.

Put on a nice pair of shorts and a tank top and go at with a weed wacker. No underwear too.

  31. windsurfmaniac

I used the most toxic blend of Clorox and ammonia. Do not breathe

  32. VISABLEWOOD

Triclopyr 4. They have the ready mix stuff at most big box stores. You can also buy concentrate from an agronomy supplier and mix it at 4 oz/gal with water. Foliar treat the poision ivy 3x during the growing season. And plan on more treatments next year.

  33. One_More_Thing_941

I just put on a hazmat suit and pulled it all out.
