So! This orchid looks like a deep red in normal lighting and in the sun- like photo 1,2,3. Btw, with time, the color of the flowers seem to get lighter, like the last photo ( a flower that fell off but all the flowers get to this color after about 1-2 months). Is this rare or something?

If you are a beginner and purchased your orchid at a grocery store, more than likely it is of the genus Phalaenopsis. Most common orchids, especially Phalaenopsis, are hybrids and it is difficult or impossible to identify the name. This isn’t to say your orchid can’t be identified. In many cases, it might be possible to somewhat identify the parents of your orchid.

I see a few orchids with that colouring at big box stores near me. It’s not as common as the pink ones and white ones but it’s not super rare either. She’s still a stunner though, love the yellow edges

This sort of “bronze” coloration is definitely on the less common end of the spectrum for Phalaenopsis, but I wouldn’t call it rare. Personally, I’m a big fan of these sorts of “sunset” shades, and there are some very nice varieties out there with this sort of coloration, like the Bronze Buddha grex, which has several nice “bronze” varieties in it, including peloric forms. Another nice bronze is Phal I-Hsin Salmon ‘Copper Star’.

It’s a great color range, but you do have to hunt a little for Phals in the these shades.

Not rare at all. This is a hybrid that was probably bred in Taiwan — probably from a company like [Taisuco](https://www.taisucoamerica.com/about/history/) — selected for it’s superior properties and then propagated in a lab and it’s very likely that hundreds of thousands of copies were made and grown on. None of these grocery store Orchids are rare: every single one of them is produced this way. There are likely some clones that have been distributed in the millions.

But that doesn’t make it any less beautiful. If YOU enjoy it, then how it was produced and in what quantities is irrelevant.

    It‘s a supermarket Phalaenopsis, literally a mass-produced global commodity…
