The green is usually just algae that has grown on the surface. Anywhere you have water, nutrients, and light you will have algae. Not really harmful but also not beneficial in any way and should be prevented.

As for why it died that could be a number of things. Did you water or otherwise keep the cube constantly saturated? It looks very wet. Usually when they die at this stage its because they either drowned or developed damping off disease and the stem rotted.

And yes, if a seedling is beyond saving you should start over and learn from the previous fail. Constant improvement is the goal!

Over watering is the same as oxygen deprivation. Roots need oxygen.

Some rockwool cubes are like cotton balls and don’t breathe well. Quality cubes, like grodan, are very efficient by comparison.

In DWC, most roots are in the water, the net basket allows oxygen for the plant. Hydro 101, bottom half of the basket wet and the top half barely moist or dry. This is achieved by humidic atmosphere. Seedlings are planted high, nested in a bed of pebbles.

Spray type cloners, aeroponics, are usually intermittently timed allowing for dry back (oxygen ) into the roots.

Small rock wool cubes can hold moisture for more than 24 hours.
