RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Residents of Star Village, along with local youth and volunteers, came together Saturday to build the neighborhood’s first community garden.
The group prepared a 16-by-33-foot plot by tilling the soil, adding compost, and getting it ready for planting. They also built two trellises for climbing plants and a bench made from recycled materials. Some landscaping work cleared space for the garden and a future shed.
Kids played a big role in the project, creating 12 star-shaped mosaic pavers that will form a walkway and starting more than 70 seeds, including tomatoes and zucchini. Those plants will go into the ground May 12 as part of the summer Junior Gardening Program. Volunteers also set up two flower beds near the front of The Nest.
The project was led by the Star Village Community Board and funded through a microgrant from the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation’s Love Your Block program and Johns Hopkins University.
Organizers say the garden is about more than just growing food, it’s about bringing the neighborhood together. They also thanked local businesses, including Jolly Lane Greenhouse and Builders Source, for donating materials.
For more information on the garden and other summer activities, residents can call 605-872-0165.
