I bought my home in September. My lot is quite big, 247.5×50 to be exact, and I have ZERO interest in mowing all this grass. I pretty much want to turn this into a haven for birds, bugs, bunnies, frogs, bats; honestly any little critter is welcome here.
My landscaping skills start and stop with weeding and mulch. I have no experience gardening. I think my zone is 5b and I’m 100% for only planting native!
I guess I’m just overwhelmed. Not sure what next steps to take, especially since I want to do nearly everything myself and need to keep it cheap. Love being house poor!
Also good to note, not kids or dogs. Would like to keep it cat friendly as I take care of a couple community cats. Also worried about ticks.
Sorry if this is just word salad lol!

Pick one area to start with and expand from there. Be it a patio or seating area, or pathway. If you can get some aerial photos, it can be helpful to mock up layouts and ideas.
I see your yard being great with zones (since it’s so long). So you could do a section that is a patio with pavers, maybe a fire pit and grill as you walk out your door. Then, if you have kids keep the grass and have a play structure and then raised garden beds in the back. Tie it all together with a winding walking path and perennials along the path (Im imagining hostas, but anything low lying). I can sketch this out if you’re interested!
Edit! Sorry, didn’t see that you don’t have kids. Either way, there is so much you could do with this! It has lots and lots of potential! 😍
