Spring has officially sprung, with many gardeners expecting to see their plants and flowers bloom over the coming weeks and months. However, a gardening expert revealed that gardeners could be sabotaging their blooms without even realising it.

Gardening expert and TikTok creator Adam Kirtland, better known as View From The Potting Bench on the social media platform, revealed there are some simple mistakes everyone makes when it comes to their garden. These mistakes could be costly, resulting in plants dying before they’ve begun to thrive.

Adam shared his five quick and easy-to-do tips with Aldi to make gardening a success this spring, without the need for breaking the bank.

Avoid overwatering

It may be tempting to keep your plants watered and hydrated, but it’s very easy to overwater them. Instead, Adam suggested misting plants, to allow them to get their hydration benefits without the risk of flooding them.

Adam said: “You’re probably overwatering your plants and it does more harm than good! Using Aldi’s Garden Spray Nozzle (£2.99) on the correct setting, is the trick! Use the ‘mist’ function to water seedlings.”

Avoid planting too early

It’s important to know what time of year plants and flowers should be planted in the garden. If particular plants are planted too early, gardeners could risk the likes of frost damage.

Adam said: “By planting out too early, you run the risk of frost getting your plants but by waiting just a couple more weeks, you’ll have plants that will flower all summer long.

“Use the Half Barrel Planter (£5.99) from Aldi to keep things flexible, so plants can be easily moved closer to the house if temperatures drop.”

“Using the wrong tools for the job can impact your results,” said Adam. “This time of year is all about cutting back old growth to make way for new, but blunt or worn tools won’t do your plants any favours.

“Sharp, clean tools are essential for healthy growth. Opt for a new Ratchet Pruner (£3.99) available at Aldi to trim plants effectively this season.”

Avoid Overcrowding

Overloading your garden can divert energy away from plants, meaning they won’t get the vital nutrients they need to grow. Adam suggested using hanging baskets and planters to free up space in the ground.

Adam said: “Too many plants in one space leads to poor results – correctly space out your plants for the best results.”

Garden on a budget

The gardening expert explained that gardeners don’t need to fork out a lot of money to help their plants thrive. Instead all you need is a few basics.

He said: “Gardening doesn’t have to be expensive! You don’t need to overspend – a few smart basics like a good storage box to keep your tools clean, a handful of good garden tools and even some brilliant garden boots, will keep you gardening all summer long!”
