Starting some cucumber for a relative who doesn’t want to direct sow. I am also new to cucumber, but will direct sow my own shortly. Can multiple plants be grown close together like this or is it better to thin these seedlings and space out the plants in a garden?

Wait until you transplant to thin. Sometimes not all the plants make it (transplant shock, birds, rolly pollies, etc) and you don’t want to hurt your odds. Once they’re growing in situ and you’ve got a few true leaves then snip the weakest one(s).

Keep them till they have a few leaves, then cut down the weakest ones.

They could still randomly die off at this early stage

You can grow 1-2 together but any more than that and they’re competing too much for nutrients and moisture and they won’t produce as well, typically.

I always thin to 1 by snipping with scissors
