I recently purchased 2 tulip trees from a local nursery. Before making my purchase, I asked an employee to expose the root flare so I could ensure there were no issues. He opened up the root ball a bit and started digging but was struggling so I told him it's no problem. Sure enough, when the trees were dropped off and I opened them up I found the worst girdling root I've ever seen. Thankfully the owner offered a free extra tree. Don't be like me! Always insist on seeing the flare before you buy!
