I’ve got a 3-year-old cherry tree that did really well last year—even had one or two cherries—but this spring it suddenly seems dead.

It started budding late this past winter, but after the last frost I noticed the buds weren’t really progressing. Over the past month there’s been zero growth. I did a scratch test and it’s brown underneath, so I’m assuming it’s not alive anymore.

I cut a few sections off it today to check things out, but I’m trying to figure out what might have caused this before I go ahead and replace it.

Any ideas on what might have gone wrong?

Probably bad planting job. Looks like it was plopped in and burried too deep. Also if that is a low spot in the yard it died much sooner because of too much water. The base of the tree looks weird and there is rot in the base where you cut it. The roots are burried in dirt when the top should be exposed on the surface.
