A high-risk takedown was conducted and the driver was arrested at the scene, police said

Officers with the Anishinabek Police Service arrested a man after a stabbing at a residence in Garden River First Nation this morning.

Shortly after 2 a.m., “police were notified that an individual had arrived at a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and reported having been stabbed while at his residence in Garden River First Nation,” the police service said in a news release.

“Further, the victim reported that the suspect is known to him.”

While en route to the residence where the attack happened, officers with Batchewana First Nation Police observed the accused leaving the scene in a vehicle at a high rate of speed.

“The vehicle was then involved in a collision, coming to a stop in a ditch,” the release said.

A high-risk takedown was conducted and the driver was arrested at the scene.

“Anishinabek Police Service, with the assistance of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Emergency Services Unit and uniformed members attended the Garden River First Nation residence to confirm there were no other victims and to clear the scene,” the release said.

The accused is a 25-year-old man from Garden River First Nation who had outstanding warrants with the Anishinabek Police Service. He is being held for bail and is charged with:


Aggravated Assault
Assault with a Weapon
Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
Failure to Comply with a Release Order – Other than to Attend Court (x2 counts)

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the 25-year-old is considered innocent until proven guilty.

Police said no other suspects are being sought in relation to this incident and no further information will be made available about this incident.
