Heaps have come out over the last couple days, I've never seen them before, they all have a black spike on the tail. In northern subrubes of Melbourne

Sawfly larvae, they eat leaves of natives and hang out in groups on the branches while they munch. Looks like it might be some sort of bottlebrush sawfly? But there are lots of varieties that look similar.

  2. Bottlebrush Sawfly larvae. Will strip the leaves down but they’re a part of the ecosystem. Unless your tree is small, they won’t do much harm, otherwise you can just pick them off. Once they’re done feasting, you can give your callistemons a light prune and a feed and they will come back even bushier

Yeah bottlebrush sawfly larvae. I just knock them off with the trowel. On plants larger than 1m they don’t really do serious harm but don’t let them munch smaller plants too much.

Yeah these things are always on one of my Callistemons, it’s small and they strip the leaves quickly. I just pick them off and it seems to bounce back pretty quick.
