Much of March showed a summer-like temperate in Southern California, leading to leaves leafing well before they usually leaf and various flowering plants popping weeks before we normally behold their delicate blossoms.

We can put “roses” in the “rose very fast” category this spring, too: Both Descanso Gardens and The Huntington are sharing snapshots of their famous rose gardens, with the not-so-surprising message that the bloom cycles are extravagantly ahead of schedule.

Yes, we broke out “extravagantly” in honor of the rose, a storied specimen that is ebulliently extravagant, in hue, scent, and moxie, and in all of the other ways these rosy icons exist in our beauty-craving world.

It’s a rose-centered “bloom boom” at Descanso Gardens, where the tulip run has concluded but all sorts of eye-catching buds are bursting with color, texture, and look-at-me loveliness.

If you’re not a member of the La Cañada Flintridge garden, be sure to get that ticket in advance so you can waltz right in to rose heaven (and skip the queue to purchase admission).

And at The Huntington in San Marino? “This year’s warm spring has brought us an early peak season” in the historical property’s showy and sprawling Rose Garden.

Past peaks in the much-loved Rose Garden, which features noteworthy and name-perfect blossoms like Ketchup & Mustard as well as Passionate Kisses, have generally occurred from the second to fourth week of May.

Check out what else is blooming at The Huntington, then make your reservation and purchase that ticket soon.

Puyas, those otherworldly blue stars of the Desert Garden, are a colorful crowd-pleaser as May approaches, as is the fabulous “fried egg flower,” better known as the Matilija poppy.
