From the arresting Great White Cherry to delicate violets, this colourful season is in full bloom

Great White Cherry
There are signs of spring everywhere. Ribbons of gold forsythia are brightening up gardens with their vivid flowers, and some of the flowering cherries have started their marvellous annual show.
I spotted a Great White Cherry (‘Tai Haku’) in full blossom, which is always an arresting sight. The large, pure white flowers bedeck every branch. It’s a long-lived cherry, sometimes up to 100 years, which is unusual as, in general, cherries have shorter lifespans of around 25 to 40 years.
